Research & Development

Overview

Our research and development philosophy is rooted in scientific rigour, material innovation, and a deep respect for the ecosystems that make winemaking possible. We are committed to exploring the full potential of grape pomace - an abundant, underutilized by-product of the wine industry - and transforming it into a refined, high-performance bio-textile.

Low-Impact Processing and Bio-Based Formulation

Innovation at Grapevine Futures prioritizes minimal environmental footprint. Our processes focus on using bio-based binders, plant-derived plasticizers, and solvent-free or low-solvent methods that honour the integrity of the raw material while reducing reliance on synthetics. Our goal is to achieve the highest possible bio-content without compromising performance.

Data-Driven Performance Testing

Every prototype will undergo rigorous mechanical, chemical, and environmental testing to ensure it meets or exceeds the expectations of premium textile industries. This includes tensile strength, flexibility, abrasion resistance, colourfastness, and lifecycle durability. Our goal is to produce a material that speaks to both luxury designers and sustainability-minded innovators.

Material Science Meets Winemaking Tradition

Each component of grape pomace - skins, seeds, stems - holds unique structural and chemical properties. Our R&D team examines these natural compounds in depth, including cellulose, lignin, tannins, polyphenols, and natural pigments, to understand how they can be recombined and engineered into a durable, flexible, and aesthetically compelling material.

Scalable, Circular, and Regionally Rooted

From small-batch experimentation to pilot-scale prototyping, our R&D roadmap emphasizes scalability. By working directly with wineries and regional agricultural partners, we aim to create a closed-loop supply chain where materials are sourced, processed, and reintegrated locally - supporting regional economies and lowering emissions associated with transport.
